What movie could you never get tired of watching?

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Sometimes I feel like the only person who likes the movie and that’s okay. Usually, when I introduce people to it they fall asleep. It’s a gentle movie, no explosions or major emotional drama, but the adventure feels just close enough to reality that it could be us instead of Walter.

Sometimes life can seem colourless and routine. We feel like we are trapped in the boxes which we are led to believe define us. We are full of “I wish I could” ideas that never seem to make it past the moment where they are spoken. Our life is.. good. A reliable office job, one that we are pretty good at. A nice house, with nice furniture, and nice decorations. It’s… nice, but we still find ourselves daydreaming, though often not as obviously as Walter, about a life for ourselves that goes un-lived. A life where the sun is shining on our faces, our hair is messy, and money doesn’t seem to matter. A life full of adventure, facing fears, and chasing what makes us happy.

A life where we are undeniably alive.

Maybe we are backpacking through distant, beautiful countries. Maybe we are surrounded by a love and family we never dreamed of. Maybe we work for ourselves, running the business of our dreams. Walter Mitty is a reminder that even if we think we never could, if we follow our dreams we wind up living a life we thought was impossible. We will wind up living for ourselves. When he was given a reason to chase his dreams, Walter finds his voice, his sense of adventure, and his bravery. He finds himself. It took something major to convince him to listen.

If there is one thing to learn from Walter Mitty, it is not to wait for that big moment which inspires us to chase our un-lived life, we should create it.
